Lai Offers Taiwan’s Assistance After Powerful Earthquake Hits Japan

Taipei: President Lai Ching-te on Tuesday expressed Taiwan's readiness to assist Japan following a magnitude 7.6 earthquake that struck off the coast of Aomori Prefecture late Monday. Lai emphasized the supportive relationship between Taiwan and Japan, highlighting the solidarity in times of disasters. He conveyed his hope for the safety of the Japanese population and their quick recovery to normalcy in a social media post.

According to Focus Taiwan, the Japan Meteorological Agency reported the earthquake late Monday night. The agency issued tsunami warnings affecting Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate prefectures as a precautionary measure. By Tuesday morning, reports indicated that 35 individuals sustained injuries, and 114,000 were instructed to evacuate, as per the Japan Fire and Disaster Management Agency.

The precautionary measures, including evacuation orders and tsunami warnings, have been subsequently lifted. The earthquake also affected infrastructure, leading to the suspension of some train services and causing power outages in numerous homes, as reported by local authorities in Japan.
