Legislative Speaker Returns from Japan, Supports Hualien Flood Victims

Taipei: People Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu, upon returning from a recent trip to Japan, expressed concern over the Hualien flood disaster and extended his wishes for a swift recovery to the victims.

According to Focus Taiwan, Han mentioned that individuals from various sectors in Japan, along with overseas Taiwanese, immediately brought up the Hualien floods during his visit. The floods were a result of the overflow of the Matai’an Creek barrier lake during Typhoon Ragasa last Tuesday. These discussions underscored the deep sympathy and condolences extended by the Japanese people to those affected.

Han shared his thoughts with reporters at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, stating, “You’re not alone,” to reassure those impacted in Hualien of the global support and hope for their recovery.

During his visit, which started last Thursday, Han and a delegation of 11 cross-party lawmakers engaged with significant Japanese political figures. Meetings included discussions with Keiji Furuya, head of the Japan-ROC Diet Members’ Consultative Council, and Taro Aso, former prime minister and senior advisor to the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. The delegation also met with former Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, now leader of Japan’s largest opposition party, the Constitutional Democratic Party, as well as leaders from Japan’s other opposition parties.

Han described the trip as “fruitful” in terms of strengthening parliamentary ties. He also emphasized the importance of visiting Taiwan’s pavilions at the upcoming 2025 World Expo in Osaka, which further solidified connections between the two nations.
