Taipei: A temperature of 12.4 degrees Celsius was recorded in Shimen District in New Taipei, marking the lowest temperature in any low-lying area in Taiwan as seasonal northeasterly winds ushered in cooler air to northern regions of the island.
According to Focus Taiwan, data compiled by the Central Weather Administration (CWA) indicated temperatures as low as 12.7 degrees in Yangmei District in Taoyuan City and 12.8 degrees in Guanxi District in Hsinchu County during the early hours of Wednesday. The CWA noted a mild recovery in northern Taiwan’s temperatures during the day, rising to 17-18 degrees before dropping again to 15-17 degrees at night.
The influence of the northeastern weather system was less pronounced in other parts of Taiwan. Daytime temperatures were expected to exceed 20 degrees in central Taiwan and reach 25-27 degrees in the southern region, as forecasted by the CWA. Despite the cooler air being relatively dry, brief showers were anticipated in the northern half of Taiwan, along the east
coast, and in the Hengchun Peninsula in the south on Wednesday.
Following occasional showers on Wednesday morning, the CWA projected that central and southern Taiwan would experience partly cloudy to sunny skies in the afternoon. Independent meteorologist Wu Der-rong described the current weather system as the coldest experienced this fall, with expectations that low-lying areas in northern Taiwan could see temperatures dip as low as 12 degrees early Thursday morning.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Environment reported that air quality across most of Taiwan was fair to good on Wednesday. However, some areas, including parts of Yunlin and Chiayi counties, Tainan City in the south, and Taitung County in the east, were under an “orange” alert, warning of unhealthy conditions for sensitive groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory or heart conditions.
