MOFA Engages with Abu Dhabi Police Regarding Alleged Detention of Taiwanese National

Abu dhabi: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) announced on Wednesday that it has initiated discussions with Abu Dhabi police to clarify the circumstances surrounding the alleged detention of a Taiwanese citizen at Abu Dhabi International Airport earlier this week.

According to Focus Taiwan, MOFA’s Dubai office, which handles affairs in Abu Dhabi, received a distress call from a Taiwanese woman named Yang on Monday. Yang reported that her husband, identified as Chen, was allegedly apprehended by five armed police officers while they were transiting through Abu Dhabi en route to Turkey.

Yang was unable to ascertain the reasons for her husband’s detention before she continued her journey to Istanbul, where she joined a tour group they were supposed to travel with, MOFA reported.

Following Yang’s request for assistance, the MOFA office in Dubai promptly reached out to the Abu Dhabi police to gather more information about the alleged detention. On Wednesday morning, Abu Dhabi police provided an initial briefing to the office but did not confirm whether Chen was indeed detained or specify the reasons behind the incident, according to MOFA.

MOFA continues to engage with local authorities to further investigate the situation and has pledged to support Chen’s family in managing the consequences of the event.
