New taipei: New Taipei Metro set a ridership record in 2025, carrying more than 30 million passengers over the year.
According to Focus Taiwan, Danhai Light Rail Transit (LRT), Ankeng LRT, and Circular Line also posted single-day ridership record highs during New Year's Eve celebrations in Tamsui, as reported by New Taipei Metro Corp. The Danhai LRT managed to carry more than 36,000 passengers on New Year's Eve despite unfavorable weather conditions, marking the second-highest single-day total on record for the line.
Single-day ridership on the Circular Line surpassed 90,000 passengers on Wednesday, driven by a significant number of transfers from the Taipei Metro and bus systems. Together, the Danhai LRT, Circular Line, and Ankeng LRT carried more than 135,000 passengers in a single day, breaking the system's previous single-day ridership record, as stated by the company.
To accommodate the high travel demand during New Year's Eve, New Taipei Metro Corp. introduced three additional trains into service on the Ankeng LRT. These trains had been under maintenance at the Danhai Depot, the company confirmed.
Reflecting on 2025, ridership on the Circular Line rebounded from disruptions caused by earthquakes in 2024, surpassing 22.04 million passengers for the year. This recovery was attributed to maintenance work and reduced train intervals, with peak-hour intervals shortened to under 5 minutes.
Increased commuter demand within the Tamsui-Taipei area contributed to the Danhai LRT's ridership exceeding 6.01 million in 2025. Meanwhile, the Ankeng LRT saw annual ridership exceed 2.03 million, supported by the introduction of a monthly commuter pass priced at NT$150, offering unlimited rides.
The company highlighted that surpassing an annual ridership of 30 million marks a significant milestone. It noted ongoing efforts to further shorten train intervals, improve service quality, and enhance the New Taipei Metro commuting network.
