New taipei: New Taipei Mayor Hou Yu-ih on Monday announced that the city will hold the contractor involved in a Tamsui District road project accountable after a burst pipe resulted in a water outage affecting approximately 62,000 households for more than three days.
According to Focus Taiwan, Mayor Hou addressed reporters at a New Taipei event, revealing that a special service window has been established to manage issues arising from the incident. Additionally, the mayor noted that basic water fees would either be reduced or waived for those affected. The city is working to restore water service to the remaining 20 percent of impacted households by the end of Monday and will ensure that the contractor assumes responsibility for the disruption.
The city government stated that Taiwan Water Corp. will adjust bills in proportion to the actual number of days households were deprived of water. A service desk was set up at the Tamsui District Office on Monday to address residents' complaints over the next three days. The city emphasized that it plans to hold both the consulting firm and the contractor accountable under their contracts, potentially imposing fines.
The Danbei Road project, a new road under construction in Tamsui, aims to alleviate persistent traffic congestion between the district and Taipei. The project includes a 5.45-kilometer elevated and ground-level four-lane expressway alongside the Tamsui River.
