New U.S. Space Forces Korea commander calls for ‘greater ties’ with S. Korea in space

The new commander of U.S. Space Forces Korea on Friday called for forging "greater ties" with South Korea in space as the allies seek to bolster their space-based capabilities against evolving North Korean threats. The two countries' militaries have stepped up efforts to bolster space-related operations, such as missile warning, to better deal with threats from the domain. The U.S. military launched U.S. Space Forces Korea in December 2022, while South Korea's Air Force upgraded its squadron-level space unit into the Space Operations Group last month. "It is important to continue to forge greater ties with the U.S. Space Force and the ROK in space," Col. John Patrick said during a change-of-command ceremony at Osan Air Base in Pyeongtaek, 60 kilometers south of Seoul, referring to the acronym of the South's official name, the Republic of Korea.
