Washington: President Donald J. Trump has enacted a Proclamation that introduces new tariffs on imports of drones and their components, aiming to enhance national security and bolster the U.S. supply chain. The Proclamation implements a 100% ad valorem tariff on specific drones that are deemed sensitive to national security, including those with a maximum takeoff weight exceeding 25 kilograms and equipped with thermal imaging capabilities.
According to The White House, these measures also introduce a 25% tariff on smaller drones and components that do not pose a significant national security threat. Additionally, a 15% tariff is applied to drone imports from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, Republic of Korea, Switzerland, and Taiwan, while a 10% tariff is set for drones from the United Kingdom, contingent upon the origin of hardware, software, and technology from these countries and the U.S.
The Proclamation empowers the Secretary of Commerce to devise an onshoring program for companies investing in the manufacture of drones and their components in the U.S. The tariffs are scheduled to take effect 21 days post-signing, with certain exemptions for non-sensitive components and approved products by the Department of War.
