Prosecutors Investigate Cyberattack on Radio Taiwan International

Taipei: The Taipei District Prosecutors Office announced its investigation into two employees and an external contractor suspected of launching cyberattacks against Radio Taiwan International (RTI). The case was reported by RTI after a Sept. 11 incident where its website’s homepage banner was altered.

According to Focus Taiwan, the suspects include a website engineer surnamed Wu, a manager surnamed Yueh, and a contractor surnamed Huang. The investigation revealed their alleged plan to execute another cyberattack on Taiwan’s National Day, Oct. 10. Following initial raids, Wu and Yueh were questioned on Sept. 26, with a second series of raids conducted on Oct. 9 at eight locations linked to the suspects.

After their questioning on Oct. 10, prosecutors sought to detain Wu and Huang without bail. However, the Taipei District Court set bail at NT$270,000 for Wu and NT$150,000 for Huang, a decision the prosecutors have since appealed. Yueh was granted bail of NT$100,000 and is required to wear an electronic monitor and is prohibited from leaving the country.

In a statement, RTI confirmed it has suspended the two employees and plans to file criminal complaints against the individuals for breach of trust, property damage, and computer security offenses. RTI also intends to pursue a civil lawsuit to seek compensation for the damage to its reputation and property.
