Red Panda Ke Sung Dies from Chest Infection in Japan

Tokyo: An 8-year-old male red panda named “Ke Sung,” sent from Taipei Zoo to Japan in April as part of an overseas breeding program, has died from a chest infection, the zoo announced on Friday. Ke Sung began exhibiting signs of lethargy in September and was diagnosed with a chest infection, which ultimately claimed his life early Thursday at Tokyo’s Tama Zoological Park.

According to Focus Taiwan, Ke Sung received treatment for breathing difficulties and showed brief signs of recovery in late September. However, he later experienced a loss of appetite, declining strength, and reduced activity. Further medical tests revealed a fluid buildup in his chest. Despite intensive medical care from the Japanese veterinary team, they were unable to save the red panda.

Ke Sung was born at Taipei Zoo on June 11, 2017, and was transferred to Tokyo’s Tama Zoological Park in April 2024. The transfer was part of a breeding program coordinated by the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums, chosen for his calm temperament and unpicky eating habits. The red panda has been classified as “endangered” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List since 2015.
