S. Korea reports 1st case of lumpy skin disease in 2024

South Korea reported its first case of lumpy skin disease (LSD) in cattle this year, the agriculture ministry said Friday. The case was confirmed at a livestock farm in Anseong, located some 65 kilometers south of Seoul, breeding 80 cows, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. This is the first LSD case in South Korea since November last year. The country has experienced a total of 107 confirmed cases of LSD since the disease first emerged in the country the previous month. To prevent further infections, the government has cordoned off the affected farm and implemented quarantine measures, the ministry added. Authorities will also carry out emergency vaccinations on farms in nearby areas to contain the spread. LSD is a highly infectious disease that causes skin lesions, fever and loss of appetite, often leading to a fall in milk production and even death.
