Taipei: With a cold air mass approaching, snow is likely to fall on mountains with an elevation of 3,000 meters or higher around Taiwan from Thursday to Friday, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA). CWA forecaster Tseng Chao-cheng indicated that the cold air mass is set to cause temperatures to drop sharply on Thursday, which is Christmas day, and early Friday morning.
According to Focus Taiwan, Tseng stated that the mountains of 3,000 meters or higher around Taiwan and 2,000 meters or higher in the north and Yilan County in the northeast could experience snowfall. In lower-lying regions across Taiwan, temperatures are anticipated to fall to 13-15 degrees Celsius and could reach as low as 10 degrees in specific areas during this period.
Tseng further noted that temperature highs over the two-day span will be around 20 degrees in the north and between 22-25 degrees in the south. The arrival of the cold air mass, combined with a seasonal northeasterly wind system, may result in heavier precipitation in Taoyuan City and areas north of it, as well as Yilan. Meanwhile, sporadic rain could occur elsewhere in the country.
The strength of the cold air mass is expected to diminish from Saturday to Sunday, with a likely reduction in atmospheric moisture, Tseng added. By Monday, weather conditions are predicted to stabilize, bringing cloudy to sunny skies across Taiwan. However, another round of seasonal winds is expected to commence on Tuesday and intensify by Wednesday, December 31, bringing brief rain to the north, the east, and the Hengchun Peninsula in the south.
