Star basketballer’s ex-girlfriend sent to prosecution on blackmail charges

A former girlfriend of popular basketball player Heo Ung has been transferred to the prosecution on charges of blackmailing him, police said Friday. The transfer by the Seoul Gangnam Police Station came after Heo, a 31-year-old player for KCC Egis, filed a complaint against her in June, alleging that she demanded 300 million won (US$220,000) from May 2021 by threatening to expose his private life through the media, social media and his club. Heo claimed that the extortion began as conflict arose between them after she became pregnant. In response to Heo's complaint, the former girlfriend filed her own complaint against him on suspicion of rape and assault, arguing that she had unwanted sex with him and became pregnant.
