Taipei: Taiwan's Supreme Court has upheld a 15-year sentence for a Filipino migrant worker convicted of murdering a fellow countryman and endangering the lives of others in 2023. The ruling, which was issued on February 11, confirmed the lower courts' decisions, finding no legal errors in the judgments. According to Focus Taiwan, the Changhua District Court found Filipino national Dizon Benjie San Agustin guilty of homicide and endangerment for murdering a fellow migrant worker in Changhua County. Agustin decided to kill his victim after attempts to reconcile with his estranged wife failed. During a trip back to the Philippines from December 2022 to January 2023, Agustin discovered that the victim had informed his estranged wife about Agustin's girlfriend in Taiwan. After reconciliation efforts failed, Agustin purchased gasoline, a blow torch, and a sickle between November 18 and November 22, 2023, hiding the items inside a workers' dormitory. Around midnight on November 23, 2023, Agustin set fire to the ro om occupied by the deceased and a roommate, blocking the door to prevent their escape. Though both occupants eventually managed to escape, Agustin attacked his victim with a sickle, causing lacerations and fractures to his head and chest, along with burns to his face and torso. The victim succumbed to his injuries on December 16, 2023, while the roommate survived with burns to his limbs and back. The Changhua verdict also noted that Agustin sprayed flammable liquid on another worker in a second room, causing shock. Local firefighters extinguished the fire, although the dormitory sustained property damage. Agustin was sentenced by the Changhua District Court to 15 years for homicide and an additional six months for endangerment, which could be commuted to a fine. Agustin appealed, but the Taiwan High Court Taichung Branch upheld the verdict, and the Supreme Court's decision on February 11 made the sentencing final.
