Suspect Indicted Over April Assault on Filipino Child, Taiwanese Man in Taipei

Taipei: A suspect who attacked a 3-year-old Filipino girl and Taiwanese man at Taipei Main Station in April has been indicted, the Taipei District Prosecutors Office said Thursday. According to Focus Taiwan, prosecutors said they brought an indictment against the 41-year-old Taiwanese man, Lee Kun-jui, on Thursday for attacking a Taiwanese man and a young Filipino girl on April 25. The indictment details that Lee first targeted the Taiwanese man, surnamed Chen, kicking him in the abdomen at around 2:07 p.m. in the lobby of Taipei Main Station. Following the initial assault, Lee then targeted a 3-year-old Filipino girl at approximately 2:24 p.m. in the same location. The indictment reveals that Lee hit the child with his hands, causing her to fall, and proceeded to kick her twice while she was on the ground, resulting in bruises on her back and face. When the girl's mother intervened, Lee attempted to attack the child again but was stopped by onlookers. Lee was subsequently arrested by police and held witho ut bail. Officers from the Railway Police Bureau's Taipei Precinct took Lee into custody on April 25, with surveillance footage provided by local authorities. During the investigation, it was determined that Lee had violated the Child and Juvenile Welfare and Rights Protection Act and the Criminal Code. Although assault charges were included in the indictment, they did not extend to attempted murder due to the absence of weapons or intent to kill, prosecutors noted. Prosecutors stated that they will seek the maximum punishment for Lee under the law, considering the violent nature of his actions against a child visiting Taiwan and the potential damage to the country's tourism image.
