Taiwan Awaits Final Batch of U.S.-Made M1A2T Abrams Tanks

Taipei: The manufacture of the remaining 28 M1A2T Abrams tanks that Taiwan purchased from the United States has been completed. These armored vehicles are anticipated to be delivered to Taiwan within the next one to two months.

According to Focus Taiwan, the Ministry of National Defense is currently coordinating the logistics to ensure the tanks are transported to Taiwan as soon as possible. The expected arrival window is from late February to early March, as per the source familiar with the matter.

This final batch of 28 Abrams tanks completes Taiwan’s acquisition of a total of 108 tanks, a deal valued at approximately NT$40.5 billion (US$1.45 billion) and approved by Washington in 2019. The first batch of 38 tanks was delivered in December 2024 and subsequently commissioned into the Army’s 584th Armored Brigade in Hsinchu County by late October 2025, following necessary training and testing.

The second batch, consisting of 42 M1A2T Abrams tanks, arrived in July 2025. These units are currently undergoing testing and training, with plans for commissioning in the second quarter of this year.

The Taiwanese Army operates around 1,000 tanks, including the CM11 Brave Tiger and M60A3 models, which have been in service for over two decades. In parallel with the M1A2T procurement, the military has also invested in upgrading the engines and cannon fire-control systems of its M60A3 tanks to enhance their operational capability, enabling simultaneous engagement and tracking of multiple targets.
