Taiwan Commends Two Indonesian Fishing Workers as ‘Role Models’

Taipei: Two Indonesian fishing workers in Taiwan were recognized as "Model Foreign Crew Members" during the National Fishers' Day celebrations. This marked the inaugural presentation of the award by Taiwan's National Fishermen's Association.

According to Focus Taiwan, the honorees, Cakida and Soli Hun, have significantly contributed to Taiwan's fishing industry and community services over the years. The Fisheries Agency highlighted their dedication in a news release, noting Cakida's journey from being unaccustomed to life onboard to becoming a respected crew member. His efforts earned him the opportunity to purchase land and build a home in his hometown within two years. He furthered his skills through Taiwan's "Retention of Foreign Intermediate Skilled Workforce" program, becoming a second-level chief engineer. Cakida also played a pivotal role in establishing an Indonesian nationals' association, providing essential services such as medication and emergency assistance, and assisting new crew members in acclimating to their roles.

Soli Hun, the other fisherman honored, has served in Yilan County's Nanfang'ao for 17 years, earning trust for his professional expertise. He demonstrated his commitment by aiding in community recovery after Typhoon Megi in 2010. Soli Hun also supported local migrant workers, organizing an Indonesian boat crew organization and serving as an executive director of the Yilan Migrant Fishermen Union. His efforts extended to managing activities at the local mosque.

The National Fishers' Day celebrations, held at Tamsui Fisherman's Wharf, feature various activities including fishing exhibitions, markets, crafts workshops, recreational games, and a concert, as noted by the agency.
