Taipei: Kenton Chance, a seasoned journalist from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), has been appointed as the new ambassador to Taiwan, with a primary objective of fostering Taiwanese investment in the Caribbean nation and bolstering diplomatic relations. Chance, who studied in Taiwan two decades ago, presented his credentials to President Lai Ching-te, marking a significant step in his transition from journalism to diplomacy.
According to Focus Taiwan, Chance's appointment comes under the leadership of Prime Minister Godwin Friday's administration, which took office following the New Democratic Party's (NDP) victory in last year's general election. Chance, reflecting on his decision to embrace the diplomatic role, shared his eagerness to serve his country. His educational journey in Taiwan began in 2006 with a government-sponsored scholarship, leading to degrees in journalism and international affairs from Ming Chuan University. His career as a journalist saw him working across various countries, including a stint at Taiwan's China Post and founding the SVG-based iWitness News.
SVG's diplomatic relationship with Taiwan, established in 1981, remains a point of focus amid shifting political landscapes. Concerns had arisen over potential changes in diplomatic recognition following the NDP's electoral success. Historically, the NDP had indicated a preference for recognizing Beijing over Taipei. However, Chance emphasized that Prime Minister Friday, since assuming leadership, has not publicly pursued this agenda.
Chance highlighted the continued diplomatic engagements between Taiwan and SVG, such as the visit of Vincentian Deputy Prime Minister St. Clair Leacock to Taiwan. He assured that maintaining ties with Taiwan aligns with SVG's long-term interests, underscoring Taiwan's contributions to the nation's development, particularly in human resource sectors.
Looking forward, Chance articulated the NDP government's commitment to "economic diplomacy," which prioritizes partnerships with countries like Taiwan to enhance SVG's economic vitality. He emphasized SVG's tourism potential, inviting Taiwanese businesses to explore opportunities in its hospitality industry.
Chance concluded by reaffirming the deep-rooted friendship between the two nations, expressing hopes for further economic integration and collaboration.
