Taiwan Film Festival Berlin to Highlight Taiwanese Women on Screen

Berlin: This year’s Taiwan Film Festival Berlin will showcase 20 Taiwanese films from Friday to Oct. 1 under the theme “Portraits and Echoes of Taiwanese Women on Screen” at the Colosseum Filmtheater.

According to Focus Taiwan, among the selected works is the internationally acclaimed “Yen and Ai-Lee” by director Tom Lin, which will be shown on Friday. Lin and his wife, actress Kimi Hsia, will participate in a post-screening discussion. Hsia stars as Yen, the film’s protagonist, the Cultural Division of the Taipei Representative Office in Germany announced in a statement Tuesday.

Other notable films include “Daughter’s Daughter,” “The Uniform,” “Zinnia Flower,” “Tropical Fish,” and “Kuei-mei, a Woman,” as listed on the event’s website. This year’s theme aims to explore women’s evolving roles in Taiwanese society, highlighting them not only as mothers, daughters, or partners, but also as resilient individuals who face challenges head-on, as stated by the festival’s curators.

In addition to the film screenings, organizers have received approval to set up food stands offering boba tea and lu wei, a Taiwanese braised food, allowing audiences to experience Taiwanese culture through taste, the office stated.

The festival is a joint effort by the office and Berlin-based Impression Taiwan. Now in its eighth edition, it serves as a crucial platform for cultural exchange between Taiwan and Germany, providing German audiences with access to Taiwanese cinema, according to the office.
