Taiwan Legislature Prepares for New Session with Key Discussions and Decisions

Taipei: The Legislative Yuan’s new session is set to commence on September 19, featuring critical discussions and decisions, as announced by Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu. Premier Cho Jung-tai is scheduled to deliver a Cabinet policy report and engage with lawmakers on September 30.

According to Focus Taiwan, the announcement followed inter-party talks led by Han to establish the opening date and agenda for the 11th Legislative Yuan’s fourth session. The agreement includes holding the first plenary meeting on September 19, focusing on a special budget to enhance economic and social resilience amidst global developments.

On the same day, the Committee of the Whole Yuan will evaluate the proposed extension of the National Audit Office’s auditor-general. Political caucuses will nominate scholars and experts for this discussion. Currently, Chen Jui-min holds the auditor-general position, set to expire on October 1, although President Lai Ching-te has nominated him for continuation, pending legislative approval.

Han stated that the second plenary meeting on September 30 will include a vote on extending Chen’s term. Premier Cho, along with ministry heads, will present the Cabinet’s policy report and respond to lawmakers’ queries that afternoon.

On October 3, Premier Cho and officials from the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics, the finance ministry, and other ministries will present a report on the special budget drafting. Following a Q and A session, the draft will be submitted for legislative review, with all caucuses agreeing against requesting reconsideration.

Additionally, Han announced that the election of standing committee conveners at the Legislature is scheduled for October 1, as per the Legislative Yuan’s current rules, where committee conveners are elected at the start of every session.
