Taiwan Partners with Caribbean Allies to Enhance Education and Tourism

Washington D.C.: Taiwan and three of its Caribbean allies will work together to enhance polytechnic education and boost sustainable tourism in the region, according to Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA). According to Focus Taiwan, a statement from MOFA on Saturday announced Taiwan's collaboration with the Washington-based Pan American Development Foundation (PADF) on an initiative titled "EcoYouth Ventures: Enhancing Sustainable Tourism in the Caribbean through Youth Empowerment and STEM Education." The partnership ceremony took place in Washington, D.C., where Taiwan's representative to the United States, Alexander Yui, signed an agreement with PADF Executive Director Katie Taylor. The statement provided limited details about the initiative or Taiwan's role, but Yui mentioned that it would benefit approximately 1,500 students in the Caribbean allies of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The focus will be on the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, with the ultimate goal of strengthening STEM education to support the development of sustainable tourism in the region over a two-year period. Taylor expressed hope that the initiative would expand education and employment opportunities for Caribbean youth while enhancing the sustainability of the region's tourism sector. Founded in 1962 by the Organization of American States, the PADF aims to improve livelihoods, strengthen disaster resilience, and promote human rights and sustainable development in Latin America and the Caribbean, according to MOFA. The ministry also highlighted its collaboration with the PADF on various projects since 2012, including disaster prevention and recovery, infrastructure development, and women's empowerment.
