Taipei: Blueberries from Poland have been approved for export to Taiwan, Taiwan’s Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) announced Wednesday. The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency (APHIA) under the MOA confirmed that quarantine inspections in Poland have been completed. Imports of the blueberries will commence once origin verification is finalized.
According to Focus Taiwan, APHIA specified that orchards supplying blueberries must operate under the supervision of Poland’s State Plant Health Protection and Seed Inspection Service (SPHPSIS). Polish suppliers are required to monitor and control pests like the spotted wing drosophila, commonly known as fruit flies, and maintain detailed pest-control records.
The agency further stated that SPHPSIS must provide Taiwan with a list and codes of eligible packing facilities six weeks before each export season. APHIA also explained that packaged blueberries must undergo sampling for export quarantine. Should any harmful organisms be discovered, the shipment will be prohibited from entering Taiwan.
According to MOA data, Taiwan already imports blueberries from several countries, including the United States, Canada, Chile, Peru, New Zealand, and Japan. The ministry reported that Taiwan imported 3,287 metric tons of blueberries in 2024, a significant increase from a decade ago.
