Melbourne: Taiwanese tennis players Hsieh Su-wei and Chan Hao-ching faced defeats in their respective matches at the Australian Open on Monday.
According to Focus Taiwan, Hsieh, alongside her Polish partner Jan Zielinski, was defeated in the second round of the mixed doubles. The duo lost 6-4, 6-4 to the American-Russian pair Jackson Withrow and Irina Khromacheva. Despite this setback, Hsieh remains in the women's doubles competition. She will be teaming up with Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko to take on Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk and Romania's Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
Chan Hao-ching, on the other hand, exited the women's doubles after she and her Ukrainian partner Lyudmyla Kichenok were beaten in the last-16 round. They lost their match 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 to the team of China's Zhang Shuai and France's Kristina Mladenovic. Hsieh now stands as Taiwan's last hope in the women's doubles category after Chan's elimination.
Highlighting her prowess on the court, Hsieh made history last year by becoming the first player in nearly 24 years to clinch both the women's doubles and mixed doubles titles at the Australian Open.
