Taiwan’s Stock Market Cap Surges Over 60% Amid Tech Boom

Taipei:Taiwan's stock market capitalization has experienced a remarkable increase of over 60% year to date, significantly driven by the booming technology sector, as revealed by Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC) Chairman Peng Jin-lung. Speaking at the Taiwan Weeks 2026 opening ceremony, Peng highlighted the robust growth in the capital markets over the past year.

According to Focus Taiwan, the surge in the stock market's value is attributed to record-breaking sales and profits by listed companies, fueled by the AI-driven growth in tech stocks. As of the end of October, the Taiex index, a key indicator for the Taiwan Stock Exchange, had risen from approximately 28,000 points at the end of October 2025 to over 45,000 points a year later. This has propelled the market capitalization to NT$158 trillion (US$4.83 trillion), marking a 61% increase from the previous year.

Taiwan Weeks 2026, taking place in Taipei, is an annual event that showcases the development of Taiwan's financial sector. With the theme "From Tech Island to Capital Hub Where Capital Meets Technology," the event aims to run through November 13. It serves as a platform to highlight investment opportunities in Taiwan and connect local industries with global counterparts, as stated by Peng.

Peng emphasized the need for financial backing from capital markets to support further technology development and international expansion. Taiwan's strategy to become a "capital hub" involves creating business opportunities for the capital markets and the asset management industry. This includes relaxing financial regulations, promoting asset management, and introducing private banking services to expand financial product offerings.
