Taiwan’s Weightlifter Chen Guan-ling Secures Bronze at World Championships

Taipei: Taiwanese weightlifter Chen Guan-ling clinched a bronze medal in the women’s clean and jerk event at the 2025 World Weightlifting Championships held in F¸rde, Norway. The competition, spanning from October 2 to 11, witnessed Chen, a promising 20-year-old athlete, lift 113 kilograms to earn her spot on the podium.

According to Focus Taiwan, Chen faced challenges during the snatch segment, resulting in no score for the event. This setback prevented her from competing for the grand medal, which combines scores from both the clean and jerk and snatch events. Chen had to adjust her usual routine by competing in the 53 kg weight class, a departure from her familiar 55 kg division, due to the absence of the latter category at the championships.

Chen’s initial attempt at snatching 89 kg was unsuccessful. On her second attempt, she aimed for 90 kg but failed again. However, her persistence paid off when she successfully lifted 90 kg on the third try, though the judges ruled it a foul due to wrist bending, leaving her without a score in the snatch event.

Chen’s coach, Hsu Ying-hsi, shared with CNA that despite the weight adjustment challenges, the nutritionists at Taiwan’s National Sports Training Center effectively managed her conditioning. Hsu expressed regret over the snatch being ruled unsuccessful but commended Chen’s overall performance.

Chen, a rising star in Taiwan’s weightlifting scene, previously secured three silver medals at the 2025 Asian Weightlifting Championships in Jiangshan, China. Her achievements there included a grand silver medal with a total lift of 194 kg, a silver in the snatch with 83 kg, and a silver in clean and jerk with 110 kg.
