Kaohsiung:A Thai influencer's social media activity in Taiwan has resulted in the arrest of 25 individuals. The National Immigration Agency (NIA) reported that the influencer, who overstayed her visa and was working illegally on a farm, posted videos of her activities online, which attracted the attention of authorities.
According to Focus Taiwan, the influencer used TikTok to share videos of herself working and dancing on the farm, which garnered over 100,000 views. These videos were used to recruit other Thai nationals to work in Taiwan, and they eventually led immigration officers to locate her despite the farm's remote position.
The NIA's Kaohsiung City Specialized Operation Brigade conducted investigations using footage from the videos to identify the farm's location. Following several surveillance operations, officers arrested 20 Thai nationals who had overstayed their visas, along with five people suspected of employing them illegally.
The agency is now investigating the potential involvement of an illegal labor brokerage in these activities. Chao Chih-cheng, captain of the Kaohsiung brigade, noted that employers hiring foreign workers illegally could face fines up to NT$750,000 (US$23,151) and, if done for profit, up to three years in prison and fines up to NT$1.2 million.
