Taoyuan: A Thai worker was killed on Thursday after being struck on the head by a crane boom while working 18 meters underground at a Metro Taoyuan construction site in Taoyuan's Bade District, according to local authorities.
According to Focus Taiwan, the Taoyuan Fire Department received a report of the accident at 9:06 a.m. and found the 50-year-old migrant worker from Thailand with severe head trauma and no vital signs. First responders performed CPR on the man and lifted him to the ground using hoisting equipment before rushing him to a hospital, but he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter, the department said.
Local authorities reported that the man was working underground in a ventilation shaft work site when he was struck by the crane boom. The Department of Rapid Transit Systems stated it is cooperating with prosecutors and occupational safety inspectors to determine the cause of the accident which took place at the intersection of Section 1, Chiehshou Road and Yiyung Street.
