U.S. Agriculture Official Visits Taiwan to Boost Meat Trade

Taipei: Luke J. Lindberg, a senior official in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), is currently visiting Taiwan on an agribusiness trade mission aimed at enhancing business relations with local meat industry representatives and promoting American food exports.

According to Focus Taiwan, Lindberg is scheduled to meet with leaders from the Taiwan branch of the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) and various stakeholders in Taiwan’s meat industry before concluding his visit on Wednesday. The mission seeks to expand trade opportunities between the two regions, as highlighted in a statement by the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) on Monday.

Lindberg, who serves as the under secretary of agriculture for trade and foreign agricultural affairs, will also participate in a forum co-hosted by the AIT and the U.S. Grains and BioProducts Council (USGBC). His appointment to the USDA came in August, following his tenure as CEO and president of South Dakota Trade, as well as chief of staff and chief strategy officer at the Export-Import Bank of the United States, the AIT noted.

USDA statistics indicate that Taiwan ranks as the eighth-largest market for U.S. agricultural exports, with trade growing by 16 percent from 2019 to 2024. The U.S. continues to be Taiwan’s leading foreign supplier of agricultural products, capturing 25 percent of Taiwan’s agricultural import market, according to USDA data.
