Taipei: Taiwan has become an increasingly popular destination for Vietnamese students seeking higher education, with enrollment surpassing 50,000 for the first time last year.
According to Focus Taiwan, Taiwan's Ministry of Education reported that 52,974 Vietnamese students were enrolled in Taiwanese colleges and universities in 2025, marking an increase of 13,364 from the previous year. Vietnam has consistently been Taiwan's largest source of overseas students for several years, making up approximately 30 percent of the total international student population.
Nguyn Trc B¡, secretary-general of Vietnam's Taiwan Affairs Committee, attributed this growth to several factors, including Taiwan's high-quality education, its advanced technology sector, and relatively affordable tuition and living costs. Nguyn noted that Taiwan has emerged as one of the top five overseas study destinations for Vietnamese students, indicating a growing interest among Vietnamese families.
During a scholarship ceremony held on June 18 by the Taiwanese Business Scholarship Foundation at Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Nguyn emphasized that Taiwan's strengths in science and technology align closely with Vietnam's development priorities. He highlighted the importance of cultivating talent in these fields, as Vietnam places significant importance on developing its science and technology industries.
Nguyn further mentioned that Taiwan began developing its technology industries years ago, and Vietnam hopes to draw from that experience as it follows a similar trajectory. The Vietnam's Taiwan Affairs Committee, established in 1997 under the Office of the Prime Minister, plays a crucial role in coordinating Taiwan-related affairs across government agencies and promoting economic and trade cooperation with Taiwan.
He also pointed out that Taiwanese businesses are among the top five foreign investors in Vietnam, making Taiwan a more attractive study destination by offering career opportunities to Vietnamese graduates both in Taiwan and Vietnam.
Additionally, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Vietnam awarded Ministry of Education scholarships to 48 Vietnamese students on July 31 to encourage them to pursue higher education in Taiwan.
