New Taipei: A man in his 70s, only identified by his surname Lin, has been formally indicted for murder after his wife tragically fell to her death from their 14th-floor apartment window in December of the previous year. The New Taipei District Prosecutors Office announced this development on Thursday.
According to Focus Taiwan, Lin is accused of having pushed his wife out of the window of their apartment located in Xinzhuang District on the morning of December 9. The victim, a woman in her 60s who had been bedridden due to hydrocephalus, met her death following the fall.
Later that day, Lin turned himself in to authorities. The New Taipei District Court, responding to the prosecutors' request, ordered Lin's detention to prevent any potential attempt to flee.
The New Taipei City Social Welfare Department reported that they had no prior records indicating domestic abuse in Lin's household. However, after thorough investigation, prosecutors concluded that Lin had the intention to murder his wife.
Lin is set to face trial, which will include a panel of three judges and six citizen judges. This follows a legal reform in Taiwan effective January 1, 2023, allowing citizen judges to participate in trials involving intentional crimes leading to death.
