Taipei:Taiwanese-American outfielder Stuart Fairchild is broadening his relationship with Taiwan beyond the baseball field during his second visit to the country. He is actively engaging in animal rescue efforts and supporting youth baseball, all while exploring his mother's hometown with his family.
According to Focus Taiwan, Fairchild expressed his desire at a press event in Taipei for his connection with Taiwan to "continue to grow year after year." A representative from Animals Taiwan's Linkou care center revealed that Fairchild has donated money and plans to visit with his wife, Hanna, to assist in caring for rescued stray dogs, including bathing them. The cause holds personal significance for Fairchild, as he and Hanna adopted their dog, Ollie, from a North Carolina shelter in 2019, a decision that has deeply impacted their lives.
Fairchild's baseball journey includes representing Taiwan at the World Baseball Classic (WBC) in March, where he hit a grand slam against the Czech Republic and a go-ahead two-run homer against South Korea. This helped Taiwan secure victories in both games at the Tokyo Dome, although the team exited in the group stage. During the current Major League Baseball (MLB) season, Fairchild participated in 14 games for Cleveland and one for Seattle, achieving three hits in 19 at-bats, one RBI, and two stolen bases.
When questioned about the possibility of playing club baseball in Taiwan, Fairchild mentioned that he would leave such decisions to his representatives, expressing gratitude for being considered for opportunities. Global Sporting Integration (GSI) Agency stated that Fairchild is looking to gradually shift his focus toward Asia and aims to return to Taiwan annually. During his visit, he has been involved in baseball camps and fan activities, advocating for grassroots baseball to ensure children can experience the sport's camaraderie despite equipment costs.
Fairchild's trip also marked a significant personal milestone, as it brought his mother back to Taiwan for the first time since she moved to the United States at age 12. The family visited Taichung, where his mother grew up, and enjoyed a sunset at nearby wetlands. Fairchild remarked, "Taiwan is now my home away from home, and its people are part of my family."
