Taipei: Taiwan is recognized as the world's "most advanced epicenter" of electronics manufacturing, according to Nvidia Corp. founder and CEO Jensen Huang. Speaking at the opening ceremony of Wistron Corp.'s first U.S. manufacturing facility, Huang emphasized Taiwan's cutting-edge manufacturing sector and the importance of expanding AI manufacturing capacity globally.
According to Focus Taiwan, Huang praised Taiwan's technology ecosystem and noted that although working with Taiwanese companies is no longer low-cost, it remains highly cost-efficient. The rapid growth of artificial intelligence has led Taiwanese companies to expand their production capacity quickly, which poses challenges such as ensuring sufficient energy supplies.
Huang highlighted the need for the global AI supply chain to expand to meet rising demand. He commended Taiwanese companies like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), Foxconn, and Wistron for their investments in U.S. manufacturing facilities, considering it a valuable partnership that benefits the United States.
He acknowledged the higher costs and less developed industrial ecosystem of U.S. manufacturing compared to Taiwan but maintained that the current surge in AI demand makes it an opportune time to invest in rebuilding U.S. manufacturing capacity. This investment is crucial for both the United States and the global supply chain.
Addressing environmental concerns, Huang explained that the latest AI data centers and factories use fully liquid-cooled systems with water recirculation, reducing water usage and increasing energy efficiency. He advised developers to engage local communities early in planning data centers and focus on improving surrounding infrastructure.
Huang also urged governments and companies to invest in power grid upgrades and sustainable energy using revenue generated by the AI industry, acknowledging the significant energy demands of AI facilities.
