Trump to Maintain Cross-Strait Policy from First Term, Says Pompeo

Taipei: Former United States diplomat Mike Pompeo indicated that the incoming U.S. administration under President-elect Donald Trump will likely maintain a consistent approach to cross-Taiwan Strait affairs similar to that of Trump's first term. Pompeo, who served as Secretary of State from 2018 to 2021, made these remarks during a forum in Taipei.

According to Focus Taiwan, Pompeo expressed confidence in Trump's policy direction, highlighting the appointment of Marco Rubio as Secretary of State. Rubio, known for his pro-Taiwan stance, is expected to continue fostering strong U.S.-Taiwan relations. Pompeo emphasized Rubio's understanding of the importance of the bilateral partnership between Taiwan and the U.S.

During a question-and-answer session at the forum, Pompeo was asked about his expectations for Trump's second term. He projected that the administration would uphold the same worldview and security policies concerning Taiwan and China as during Trump's earlier presidency. Pompeo cited the administration's previous efforts to deter adversaries challenging the values shared by the U.S. and Taiwan.

Pompeo also called for ending the U.S.'s "strategic ambiguity" policy regarding Taiwan, which has been in place since 1979. He argued that maintaining ambiguity could mislead the international community and increase regional aggression, advocating for a transparent stance on defending Taiwan in case of a Chinese invasion.

Reflecting on Trump's potential tariff hikes, Pompeo acknowledged Taiwan's trade surplus with the U.S. and encouraged Taiwan to strategize for beneficial trade outcomes. He urged Taiwan to prioritize its interests, echoing Trump's "America First" policy.

Pompeo's visit to Taiwan, his second in less than eight months, was facilitated by the Formosa Republican Association. During his tenure in the Trump administration, Pompeo was recognized as a steadfast supporter of Taiwan-U.S. relations, approving arms sales and easing restrictions on bilateral exchanges. His efforts also led to the establishment of several bilateral initiatives between the two nations, further strengthening ties.
