Typhoon Champi May Impact Taiwan Next Week

Accra:Typhoon Champi is projected to strengthen and approach the waters off eastern Taiwan by next Thursday, with some models indicating a potential crossing over the island, as reported by the Central Weather Administration (CWA) on Saturday.

According to Focus Taiwan, Typhoon Champi was located 2,980 kilometers east-southeast of Eluanbi, Taiwan's southernmost tip, as of 2 p.m. Saturday. It is moving west at a speed of 22 kilometers per hour, with maximum sustained winds of 162 kilometers per hour and a storm radius of 180 kilometers.

CWA forecaster Chang Cheng-chuan noted that Champi could intensify further while moving west before veering west-northwest toward waters east of Taiwan. The storm is anticipated to reach these waters by Thursday, potentially shifting north afterward. However, if the Pacific high-pressure system remains strong, Champi might adopt a more westward path, possibly crossing Taiwan.

Chang also forecasted fair to cloudy skies in Taiwan through next Tuesday, with rain expected from Wednesday, especially in the northern and northeastern regions.
