Taipei: Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) on Wednesday expressed gratitude for the European Parliament's recognition of Taiwan's resilience and technological strengths in its report titled "Findings and Recommendations of the Special Committee on the European Democracy Shield (EUDS)." According to Focus Taiwan, the document, released Tuesday, identified Taiwan as a like-minded partner that has begun developing principles and frameworks for safeguarding information integrity based on democratic values, media pluralism, and human rights. Taiwan is "a leading partner in terms of situational awareness" and has been organizing civil defense and resilience exercises to counter China's increasing gray-zone warfare tactics, the document said. Taiwan's whole-of-society approach and best practices could contribute to the European Union's development of preparedness measures and enhance the overall effectiveness of the European Democracy Shield, it said. The document also highlighted Taiwan's "leading role " in high-tech development and its extensive experience in defending against China's hybrid attacks and foreign information manipulation and interference (FIMI). It called for regular exchanges on relevant security issues and stronger cooperation with like-minded partners in East Asia, including Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea, on countering FIMI and the sabotage of undersea cables. In a statement on Wednesday, MOFA thanked the European Parliament for its recognition and support, saying Taiwan would continue to deepen exchanges and cooperation with the EU and other like-minded partners to counter information manipulation and hybrid threats from authoritarian regimes, while contributing to peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region and around the world. The ministry noted that the EUDS Special Committee visited Taiwan in July 2025 on its first trip to Asia, with committee chair Nathalie Loiseau leading the delegation in meetings with President Lai Ching-te and Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung to discuss issues such as societal resilience and countering FIMI.
