Taipei: A Filipino man is being held in custody for allegedly killing a Taiwanese man on a street in Taichung's Tanzi District, local police said Tuesday. Police identified the deceased as Lee, 41, but did not reveal the 36-year-old Filipino man's identity.
According to Focus Taiwan, the Daya police precinct reported that they were notified on Sunday morning about Lee being found lying in a field lane near Fengxing Road with more than five stab wounds to his chest. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he later died.
Police stated that a knife was discovered near the scene, and witnesses reported seeing Lee in a heated argument with another man. CCTV footage revealed Lee, still in a hospital gown, leaving Taichung Tzu Chi Hospital at 10 p.m. on Saturday.
Within 10 hours of the report, police apprehended the suspect at a rental property in the district, where they also found the clothes he had worn during the attack. The man confessed to the crime during questioning, and the case has been transferred to the Taichung District Prosecutors Office.
According to police, the suspect had overstayed his visa and was working part-time jobs, earning around NT$1,000 (US$32.9) a day. Investigations are ongoing, although it is not believed that the suspect and the victim were acquainted.
