Taipei:Taiwan is seeking to enhance cooperation with European nations to bolster the security of critical infrastructure such as undersea cables. This initiative was announced by Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung in a prerecorded video address to the Berlin Security Conference.
According to Focus Taiwan, Lin highlighted Taiwan's extensive experience in countering cyberattacks, disinformation, and gray-zone activities, which makes it a valuable partner. He emphasized a whole-of-society approach to resilience and introduced the "RISK Management Initiative on International Undersea Cables" to tackle emerging security challenges.
The Berlin Security Conference, held on November 3-4, centered on Europe's defense capabilities, threats from Russia, and the ongoing war in Ukraine. The conference convened political leaders, military officials, and representatives from the defense industry, with Lithuania as the partner country for the event.
Lin's address on Facebook underscored the strategic implications of the Taiwan Strait situation for Europe's security and prosperity, particularly in the context of economic security. Taiwan's strengths in semiconductors, AI, ICT, and advanced manufacturing were cited as assets to assist Europe in reindustrialization efforts.
Lin noted Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.'s planned facility in Germany, GlobalWafers Co.'s investment in Italy, and collaboration with Poland on a technology park as examples of Taiwan's expanding industrial footprint in Europe. These efforts aim to create secure and reliable cross-border supply chains.
Taiwan is prepared to enhance cooperation with Europe by leveraging their combined strengths in technology, industrial development, and security resilience, Lin stated, aspiring to build a safer, freer, and more prosperous future for future generations.
