Taiwan’s MOFA Condemns China’s Statement on ROC Sovereignty

Taipei:Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) has issued a condemnation against China for making a statement that undermines the sovereignty of the Republic of China (ROC). The ministry emphasized that the two sides of the Taiwan Strait are not subordinate to each other, a fact that remains unchangeable.

According to Focus Taiwan, the condemnation follows a joint statement issued by China's Foreign Ministry after talks between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema. The statement included Gabon's reaffirmation of its adherence to the "One China principle" and what MOFA described as a distortion of United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758.

Resolution 2758, adopted in 1971, addresses the issue of China's U.N. representation but does not mention Taiwan. Beijing interprets it as granting the right to represent Taiwan, which it claims as part of its territory. MOFA accused China of using bilateral meetings to pressure countries into making statements that undermine the ROC's sovereignty.

The ministry reiterated that the ROC is a sovereign, independent country that has never been ruled by the People's Republic of China (PRC). It asserted that only Taiwan's democratically elected government has the right to represent its people internationally, including within the United Nations system. Additionally, MOFA accused China of attempting to undermine the international order by inserting its "One China principle" into bilateral documents with other countries and urged Gabon not to succumb to Beijing's political manipulation.
