Taipei: Lai marks the end of World War II by urging cooperation among democracies. He highlighted Taiwan's involvement in commemorating the atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, where Taiwan's representative to Japan, Lee Yi-yang, participated for the first time.
According to Focus Taiwan, Lee joined global representatives in mourning the victims and praying for peace. The bombings by the United States in August 1945 were the only use of nuclear weapons in an armed conflict, prompting Japan's surrender to the Allies and marking the end of World War II on August 15.
Lai emphasized the significance of former Allied and Axis powers sitting together as democratic allies, showcasing friendship, respect, and solidarity among democratic nations. Although Taiwan was under Japanese colonial rule in 1945, it is now represented in such events as part of the international democratic community.
