Next Wave of Northeast Monsoon to Bring Cooler Temperatures to Taiwan

Taipei:The next wave of the northeast monsoon is set to arrive in Taiwan on Monday, bringing cooler temperatures to the region. The Central Weather Administration (CWA) has forecasted that the arrival will cause temperatures in parts of northern Taiwan to dip to as low as 16 degrees Celsius.

According to Focus Taiwan, the northeast monsoon is expected to affect Taiwan early next week before weakening by Thursday. Overnight lows are predicted to range between 17 and 18 degrees in areas north of Chiayi County and in northeastern Taiwan, with some exposed regions in northern Taiwan potentially experiencing temperatures dropping to around 16 degrees.

The current northeast monsoon in Taiwan is not as strong as the upcoming wave, the agency noted. On Saturday, daytime highs were expected to reach 23-25 degrees in the Greater Taipei area and Yilan County in the northeast, 25-28 degrees in Taoyuan City and Hsinchu County in the north, as well as Hualien and Taitung counties in the east, and 28-32 degrees in areas south of Miaoli County. Despite the expected cooler temperatures, large temperature swings between day and night are anticipated to continue across Taiwan, with nighttime lows forecasted to fall to 21-25 degrees on Saturday.

The monsoon is also bringing moisture to Taiwan, with the possibility of heavy rain in the northeastern region of the island on Saturday. A heavy rain advisory has been issued for the mountainous areas of Yilan, where accumulated rainfall could exceed 200 millimeters within 24 hours or 100 mm within three hours. The current northeast monsoon is anticipated to weaken by Sunday, leading to stable weather and rising temperatures across Taiwan.

Additionally, a tropical depression currently over the waters north of Guam is likely to intensify into a tropical storm by Saturday or Sunday, the CWA reported. Independent meteorologist Wu Der-rong noted that the system could strengthen into a typhoon by Monday before reversing direction and moving east-northeast, posing no threat to Taiwan.
